3 Things To Expect When You Have Your Wisdom Teeth Removed

Getting your wisdom teeth removed is a very routine procedure for an oral surgeon, but it is still something that you personally have never experienced before. Because of this, it is important that you do all that you can to prepare. Knowing what to expect when you have your wisdom teeth removed can provide you with a great deal of comfort and help you feel more prepared for the procedure. This article will discuss 3 things to expect when you have your wisdom teeth removed:

You Will Be Disoriented After Surgery

Because most oral surgeons opt to sedate their patients for wisdom teeth removal, you will feel quite disoriented after the procedure. You may be more emotional than normal, and a bit unsteady on your feet. This will only last for a couple hours following the procedure, but it is very important that you have someone there who can be with you during this time. Schedule to have someone ready to pick you up after the procedure, and also watch you for the next several hours following.

Large Amounts Of Blood

Because you had four large teeth removed from inside of your mouth, you can expect to lose a great deal of blood in the first couple of days following the surgery. This isn't anything that you need to worry about, but is very common after the surgery. However, it is often somewhat uncomfortable for people, especially if they happen to swallow a large amount of the blood. A great way to help control the amount of blood the pools in your mouth, and to avoid swallowing it, is to place gauze over all of the stitched areas where your wisdom teeth used to be. This gauze will successfully capture the blood, and allow you to just swallow your spit. However, keep in mind that you will need to change out the gauze often to ensure that it doesn't become too saturated with blood.

Difficulty Chewing

You may notice that your mouth is quite sore following the procedure. While pain medicine can help to reduce this pain, it is most important to avoid chewing towards the back of your mouth where your wisdom teeth were removed. If you find that you have a hard time even chewing in the front of your mouth, then a liquid diet is necessary until you feel enough relief from pain to do a minimal amount of chewing.
